Athlete of the Week: Jake Gajewski, Newman Catholic

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Football, basketball, and more basketball. That's life for Jake Gajewski.

The Newman Catholic junior starred on the football field this fall. This winter, he's been one of the top hoops players in the Marawood South, averaging nearly 12 points per game.

"Most of (my teammates) play three sports, football basketball and track," Gajewski said. "We all know each other pretty well, so that translates to the basketball court."

Watching him play, it's easy to see that Gajewski was a second team All-Cloverwood quarterback. He may be among the conference leaders in scoring, but it's his flashy passing ability that really stands out.

"You don't seem many guys at the high school level who can make no look passes," Newman Head Coach Jeff Gress said. "Most of them stare right where they're going to pass it. But Jake hast hat ability to come down on a drive and look one way and dump it another way."

Gajewski's ability and success on the court doesn't come as a surprise to many who know him. He's been around the game of basketball his entire life, growing up playing against his two older brothers.

"We usually go to the Y and play basketball," he said. "A lot of times I'm playing with my brothers' older friends, so I've always been around guys five or six years older than me, so that's really helped me out."

"He's a very hard-working kid," Gress agreed. "He's dedicated to his game. He'll stay after and take more shots.

"He does it quietly though, Gress added. "He's not a kid full of a lot of words. He's a true competitor and a very hard-working individual."
