Athlete of the Week: Taylor Penn, Wausau West

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Scoring 1,000 career points is a rare accomplishment, yet the Wausau West Warriors have had two players do it already this season.

In late November, former Newsline 9 Athlete of the Week Jasmin Samz dropped her 1000th career point in a Warriors loss to Pulaski.

This past Friday, Taylor Penn followed suit, and he made sure his milestone came in a victory.

Penn scored the 10 points he needed to reach a thousand in the first half alone, and followed it up with five more in the second, including a crucial 3-pointer late in the fourth to help seal the Warriors win.

"There's been a ton of guys that have come through Wausau West the last few years that have been great players," Penn said. "So it's just an honor to have an accomplishment like this."

"I think it speaks volumes for Taylor and how consistent he's been throughout his high school career and just how he's continued to improve," Wausau West Head Coach Nate Lemmens said. "Each year he's gotten better and better."

But believe it or not, Penn's milestone wasn't even the biggest storyline of the night.

The Warriors hung on for a 45-44 win over Rhinelander, which is coached by Derek Lemmens, Nate's brother.

"It's kind of unique, playing Derek and having Taylor get his 1000th point on the same night," Lemmens said.

"The game itself was against Rhinelander and my brother, but really the night was about Taylor and Wausau West basketball getting a victory," Lemmens continued. "I know that was the most important thing on his mind, and the 1,000 points was just a bonus that we got to add that night."

The Warriors one-point win comes one year after Derek Lemmens and Rhinelander took them down by a single point.

"A win's always good, and we got it over coach's brother," Penn said with a smile. "So that's always a nice thing to get."

The Warriors (7-4) play D.C. Everest on Friday.
