Cardell Potter wins 52nd Eagle River World Championship

Drivers from all over the world came out to compete in the 52nd Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby over the weekend, but it was Wisconsin's own Cardell Potter who won the big race.

Potter worked his way to the front with about six laps to go.

"I was giving it all I had, it was getting tough those last couple of laps and I knew they were breathing down my neck, but when I could see that checkered flag waving there I knew it was a dream that just came true," Potter said.

Potter beat two time-time defending champion Malcolm Chartier, who ended up in 2nd place. Matt Schulz, from Wausau, led the first part of the race, but did not end up finishing after brake and belt problems with his sled. However, Schulz was still excited with the outcome.

"Malcolm has been tough here the last couple of years and for Cardell to come out and take him down is just huge. You know good friend of mine and really proud of them guys," Schulz said.

Even after the win, Potter already has his eyes on the next race, despite an unfortunate promise he may have made.

"I'm afriad if you ask my mom she made a bet with me and I might have slipped out the words that if I ever won a world championship I'd call it quits, but I hope she doesn't hold that to me now," Potter said.

A lot of the drivers at Eagle River will stick around for the Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship next weekend.
