Puerto Rico creates first nature reserve trail for the blind

Posted:

Puerto Rico has created the U.S. territory's hiking trails for blind people at a nature reserve.

Natural Resources Secretary Carmen Guerrero says the trails feature QR codes where people can listen to information about the reserve in the southeastern coastal town of Maunabo. She said Thursday that people who don't have cellphones can use one of five recorders installed by the government.

The trails in the Punta Tuna Nature Reserve also were built to prevent blind people from entering areas that are off limits to park visitors.

The government also bought special wheelchairs for people with physical impediments who want to explore the nature reserve.
