Athlete of the Week: Mathew Janke

SCHOFIELD (WAOW) -- Mathew Janke is in his junior year at D.C. Everest, but his passion for hockey began far before he played at the varsity level.

"Born in Minnesota, is kind of in my blood," he said. "I just love playing hockey, I love the guys on the team... I never get enough of it."

"He's been with us for three years now and just seeing his growth and maturation is tremendous," DCE Head Coach Dan Vanslyke said. "When he came in as a freshman he was a little raw."

Now he's found his place on the team as one of its top power play scorers. This past Saturday, the first of Janke's two goals came on a power play.

It was one of five third-period goals for the Evergreens, who came away with a 5-1 win over Sun Prairie.

"I just want to be the best I can be, and help the team out because if I know I'm not playing well, especially the young kids will see that and they won't play as well," Janke said. "I just want to be a good role model and work for them."

"Matt's a tremendous kid," Vanslyke added. "He's a hard-working kid. He's skilled witht he puck and he's getting rewarded for taking care of his opportunities."

D.C. Everest is currently in fourth place in a very good Wisconsin Valley Conference, but Janke hopes he can continue to make plays that lead to more wins for the Evergreens.

"Coach VanSlyke and Coach Hanke are always out there pushing me to get better," he said. "(I just want to) keep maturing through the season and just keep working hard and with the help of my teammates and linemates just keep putting pucks in the net."
