Boy rescued after wandering onto icy river

(ABC) -- Rescue crews in New York saved a young boy who wandered onto the frozen Bronx River Thursday.

The boy, believed to be 10, could be seen standing still as firefighters scrambled to reach him.

There was reportedly a second child with him who managed to get off the ice before it began to crack.

One first responder jumped into the water near the shore, while fellow rescuers lowered a ladder down the side of a bluff.

The firefighter in the water was able to pass the ladder to the boy, who climbed over the broken ice to safety.

He was put into a nearby ambulance and taken to the hospital for observation
