VA investigator says she hopes to thank whistleblower

TOMAH, Wis. (AP) -- The lead investigator in a Tomah VA probe says she would like to thank the whistleblower who raised allegations of opiates being overprescribed at the medical center.

Minutes before the press conference was set to begin Friday police escorted whistleblower Ryan Honl from the site.

Minutes later VA Under Secretary for Health Carolyn Clancy spoke about an ongoing investigation into allegations of widespread opiate overuse and retaliatory practices at the facility. A 35-year-old Marine died of an overdose in the medical center's inpatient care unit in August.

Clancy says senior clinicians from outside the area will review the hospital's medical practices and a separate accountability team will investigate employee concerns. She said she would welcome whistleblower testimony and hoped to thank Honl in person.
