With handwritten plea, 84-year-old hunter charms lawmakers

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- George Krog just wants to shoot a deer. Powerful Minnesota lawmakers are trying to help him.

Krog, who is 84, says the hills are too steep and the wind is too strong for him to stay out hunting long now. And he never sees bucks. He wrote a letter in December asking Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk for help.

Bakk responded with a bill that would allow Minnesotans 84 and older to take a doe without a permit.

Rep. David Dill is also backing the change, which could impact as many as 2,200 older hunters. The Crane Lake Democrat says all lawmakers want to help people like Krog.

Krog says he'll have a deer on opening morning of the next hunting season if the bill becomes law.
