Car bomb explodes in Niger town targeted by Boko Haram

Posted:

Witnesses say a car bomb has exploded near a government building in a Niger town that has been attacked three times over the past week by Boko Haram militants.

Hassan Maina, a resident reached by telephone Monday in the town of Diffa, said that around 3 p.m. people heard a large explosion near the customs office.

He said that casualties were taken to the hospital but there was no immediate official death toll.

While Boko Haram is well known for car bombings and suicide bombings in Nigeria, it had not carried out such assaults within neighboring countries.

Monday's bombing comes as Niger's lawmakers are due to vote on a plan to send troops to help Nigeria rout the terror group blamed for 10,000 deaths over the past year.
