Guatemala mob kills stepmother suspected in girl's death

Posted:

A crowd of about 200 villagers has burned to death a woman whom they suspected in the death of her stepdaughter.

Volunteer firefighter spokesman Julio Sanchez says the mob beat and burned the woman to death in the village of Caridad, about 28 miles (45 kilometers) south of Guatemala City. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Paola Rivera.

The mob attacked Rivera after finding the body of her 8-year-old stepdaughter in a latrine pit next to her home. The crowd apparently believed Rivera had played a role in the girl's death because she no longer wanted the girl's father to have to pay child support.

The villagers also tried to attack the father, but he was taken into custody by police as a suspect in his daughter's death.
