UPDATE: Man turns himself in after Waushara County hit and run
TOWN OF LEON (WAOW) -- Saturday evening a man came to the Waushara County Sheriff's Department to turn himself in after he hit and killed a man who was riding his bike earlier that morning, says the Waushara County Sheriff's Department.
The man who was killed has been identified as 56-year-old James Shafer of Redgranite. Authorities say he was wearing reflective clothes and had lights on his bike.
The man who turned himself in is not being named. Authorities say his name will be released after a court appearance. They say he is in the Waushara County Jail and the vehicle involved has been impounded.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Waushara County 911 Center received a call around 3:01 Saturday morning reporting a person had been struck by a vehicle, according to a press release from the Waushara County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened on County Road EE according to the press release.
The Waushara County Sheriff's Department, Redgranite Fire Department and Waushara County EMS responded to the scene.
Officers say it appears the male victim had been riding a bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle. They say there were no other vehicles on scene when they arrived.
Sheriff's officials say the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The situation is being investigated by the Waushara County Sheriff's Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
The initial investigation led officials to believe the striking vehicle may be a Ford, according to the press release.
No names have been released.
