OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources biologist says the sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago may continue through Sunday while it may last another two or three days on upriver lakes.
Sturgeon spearers took 488 fish from Lake Winnebago and upriver lakes Sunday. The DNR says the adult female harvest cap for Lake Winnebago is near the halfway point while the cap is at 72 percent for upriver lakes.
The DNR says seven of the 403 sturgeon taken Sunday on Lake Winnebago weighed more than 100 pounds.
Last year, the spearing season lasted just six days before the cap was reached. Harvest numbers have been raised 6 percent this season with a quota of 2,558 sturgeon.
The DNR has issued more than 13,000 spearing licenses this season.
