Right-to-work court battles look tough for Wisconsin unions

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A labor expert says Wisconsin union leaders probably won't get much help from judges if they decide to challenge Republicans' new right-to-work provisions in court.

Republicans who control the Legislature have fast-tracked a bill that would make Wisconsin the 25th state to prohibit unions from reaching deals with businesses that require workers to pay union fees as a condition of employment. They have the votes to pass the measure, and Republican Gov. Scott Walker has said he'll sign it.

That leaves a court fight as unions' only option.

Paul Secunda is a labor expert at Marquette University. He says no one has ever mounted a successful legal challenge to right-to-work laws.

Wisconsin Republicans say they've modeled their bill after Michigan and Indiana's laws, both of which have withstood lawsuits.
