Romanian parliament approves new spy chief

Posted:

The Romanian parliament has approved a new spy chief who has named the fight against corruption and cyber security in Ukraine as his priorities.

Lawmakers voted 498-15 in favor of installing Eduard Hellvig to the post. The previous chief resigned after criticizing the country's top court for rejecting security laws that allowed the government to collect data on people without court approval.

Hellvig, 40, on Monday spoke of "the tense geostrategic situation" in eastern Europe and said NATO member Romania is providing cyber security for Ukraine.

The former European Parliament lawmaker takes over the agency at a challenging time. It is roiling from accusations that a senior official meddled in the presidential electoral campaign, something the official denied in a parliamentary hearing.
