US, Venezuelan officials meet amid rising diplomatic tension

Posted:

The head of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Caracas is having a rare meeting with Venezuela's foreign minister days after the socialist South American country announced it had detained American spies and would be taking steps to shrink the U.S Embassy staff.

U.S. ChargT d'Affaires Lee McClenny posed for photographs with Foreign Relations Minister Delcy Rodriguez before heading into a closed-door meeting Monday morning.

The two countries have not exchanged ambassadors since 2010.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro regularly rails against the U.S. for meddling in his country's affairs, and has taken to leading weekly chants of "Gringo, go home." On Saturday, he laid out a series of measures against U.S. diplomats and tourists, including a promise to limit the number of U.S. diplomats and impose a tourist visa requirement.
