UPDATE: Republicans reject proposed apology for Walker comments

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republicans have rejected a proposed apology for comments Republican Gov. Scott Walker made comparing his standing up to union protesters to his ability to confront international terrorists.

Democrats offered the resolution Thursday at the beginning of debate over a bill to make Wisconsin a right-to-work state.

Republican Speaker Robin Vos says if the resolution were solely about thanking public workers for the job they do, the GOP would approve it unanimously. But he says the goal is to score political points against Walker, a likely presidential candidate.

He says the resolution is an attempt to distract from the real issues.

Democratic Minority Leader Peter Barca says there will be a vibrant debate about how the bill will drive down wages and make workers less safe.
