Thousands sign petition to cancel donkey basketball game

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- A donkey basketball game scheduled to take place next week at Edgar High School is drawing some critics.

"When I received the flier from school that my 9-year old brought home, I went onto the company's website," said Jessica Kilty of Wausau.

Kilty says she didn't like what she saw.

"I was appalled. I could not believe that they would be basically be abusing animals for entertainment purposes," Kilty said.

Kilty set up a web page on Change . org where people can read about the event and petition to have donkey basketball canceled.

Within four days, she had more than 2,000 signatures.

It didn't take long before word got to CJ Cordell who owns Dairyland Donkey Ball. The business is based in Chippewa Falls and travels around the state to bring donkeys to events.

"They're uneducated about what they're trying to stop and they don't know what goes on at a donkey basketball game," Cordell said.

Kilty argues the game puts too much stress on the donkeys.

"Two-hundred-fifty pounds on a 500 pound donkey is quite a bit more than the actual weight limit," Kilty explained.

Cordell says his family has hosted donkey games since the 1930s. He says the opponents are misinformed.

"They're able to carry more weight than what these people think," explained Cordell.

Both parties say they want what's best for the donkeys, but they can't agree on whether donkey basketball is a good or bad thing.

Edgar School and Dairyland Donkey officials say they have no plans to call off the donkey ball fundraiser.

Kilty says she plans to protest if the game is not canceled.

The game is scheduled for March 16.
