Italian cop accused of luring girls to home, assaulting them

An Italian policeman went on trial Tuesday in the city Padua, accused of luring young women to his home through a couch-surfing website and then drugging and sexually abusing them.

Prosecutors asked the court to convict Dino Maglio and sentence him to more than seven years in prison. The next hearing in the fast-track trial is April 14.

An Australian teen says she was abused by Maglio while she, her mother and sister stayed at his house, which Maglio had advertised on a couch-surfing site. Other women have since come forward with similar claims.

Boris Dubini, who represents the Australian teenager, said Maglio's claim that the sex was consensual was nonsense given the tranquilizer he gave her turned her into a "rag doll" and she couldn't resist.

Calls to Maglio's lawyer were not returned Tuesday. Maglio is being held in a military prison and was not present for Tuesday's hearing.

Couchsurfing CEO Jennifer Billock said the San Francisco-based site was cooperating with authorities and applauded the victims for coming forward.

"We believe people everywhere, women in particular, have the right to travel safely and without fear of assault or intimidation," she said in a statement.
