Sierra Leone president names new VP after firing predecessor

Posted:

Sierra Leone's president has sworn in a new vice president, a day after firing his predecessor.

State television showed President Ernest Bai Koroma swearing in Victor Foh on Thursday.

Foh was until recently the West African nation's ambassador to China. He is also a former secretary-general of the ruling party, the All People's Congress.

Koroma removed Samuel Sam-Sumana from the vice president's post on Wednesday, citing his recent expulsion from their political party.

The firing came after days of intrigue. After Sam-Sumana was expelled from the party, his security team was disarmed, and he fled his residence. He then requested asylum from the U.S. Embassy, which it did not grant.

Sam-Sumana says his removal was unconstitutional and he will challenge it in court.
