UK election candidate accused of plot with far-right quits

Posted:

A candidate in Britain's national election has quit the race after a newspaper accused him of plotting with a far-right group to stir up racial tensions in order to win votes.

The Conservative Party said Monday that Afzal Amin was no longer its candidate in Dudley North.

His fate had looked sealed since the Mail on Sunday newspaper reported that Amin had suggested the English Defense League call a demonstration against a planned mosque in the central England constituency -- and then call it off, with Amin taking the credit.

He was recorded saying that in return he would be the group's "unshakeable ally" in Parliament.

Amin, one of relatively few Muslim officers in the British Army, had previously said the newspaper's account was misleading.
