MERRILL (WAOW)- A former Merrill educator is recognized for his efforts to see the River Bend Trail in Merrill become reality.
Gene Bebel set up the River District Development Foundation to raise awareness about the trail and the money to develop it.
"The single most important thing is for a small community to feel good about itself, and we hope the trail brings people together to do even better things for the community," Bebel said.
The 2.5-mile trail stretches from downtown Merrill and will eventually reach Council Grounds State Park.
Bebel credits an army of volunteers for helping to make a new bridge and the paved walkway along the river possible.
"I work with some marvelous people who give of their own time and energy, and I like being with them and enjoy that," Bebel said.
