Polish president loses 1st round, results confirm

Posted:

Official results in the first round of presidential elections in Poland confirm that newcomer Andrzej Duda narrowly edged out incumbent Bronislaw Komorowski.

The state electoral commission released the results just after midnight on Tuesday showing that Duda won 34.76 percent of votes, while Komorowski took 33.77 percent of votes in Sunday voting.

Because neither candidate polled more than 50 percent, the two will face each other in runoff.

The results are surprising given that Komorowski had long been expected to easily win the race, but they are in line with exit polls.

Punk rock musician Pawel Kukiz came in third with 20.8 percent of the vote. The strong showing for the anti-establishment candidate that may reflect voter frustration.
