Guyana opposition vote count shows victory over ruling party

Posted:

An opposition coalition in Guyana is claiming victory over the long-dominant ruling party in the South American country.

Opposition leader David Granger tells reporters that the coalition's own tabulation of results from Monday's election gives his bloc a substantial lead over the governing People's Progressive Party.

The Elections Commission is expected to release official results Wednesday.

Granger said Tuesday that the coalition's count of publicly displayed results from nearly all polling stations shows it ahead with more than 180,000 votes to nearly 130,000 for the PPP. The governing party said the race was too close to call.

The six-party opposition coalition is a multi-ethnic grouping that has posed a challenge to the racial politics that have long dominated Guyana. The PPP has controlled parliament since 1992.
