Yemen officials say some ground fighting after cease-fire

Yemeni security officials and witnesses say fierce fighting has broken out in the southern city of Dhale about a half hour after a five-day cease-fire began.

They said Shiite rebels known as Houthis and their supporters, troops loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, attempted to storm the city, firing tanks, rockets and mortars.

There were no reports of airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels in the first hours after the truce took effect at 11 p.m. (2000 GMT, 4 p.m. EDT).

The officials and tribal officials as well as pro-Hadi forces also accused the Houthis and their allies of reinforcing their positions, especially in Lahj province.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to brief journalists, and the witnesses did so over fears of their safety.
