Behind the scenes at the Marathon Co. dispatch center

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- When someone needs help in a crisis, they call 911. While emergency crews are on the way it's dispatchers who keep them calm.

"Even on the worst days you still feel the rewards in it," said Marathon County Dispatcher Jennifer Head.

Head is a mother of four, but she watches out for all of Marathon County.

"It's a gamble. At any given time it can go from quiet in here to being slammed," said Head.

Head started working in the dispatch center three years ago. Now she gives advice when no one else can.

"You are the person that somebody calls when they are having the worst moment of their life," she said.

Marathon County has more than a dozen certified Public Safety Telecommunicators, commonly known as dispatchers. They are all trained in helping the public in emergencies. This year one of Marathon County's own, Julie Ganski, was named the Wisconsin Telecommunicator of the year.

Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks says he feels lucky to have such a great department.

"This center has their hands full but is always overcoming all of the odds," said Parks.

"We have great relationships with all of the officers here," said Marathon County Dispatcher Chad Zerkle.

And that makes the team strong. Helping them, help others.
