US commandos kill senior IS commander in Syria raid

BEIRUT (AP) -- U.S. officials say a senior Islamic State commander has been killed in the first known U.S. ground operation targeting IS militants in Syria.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced this morning that U.S. commandos carried out the raid in eastern Syria in which they also captured the commander's wife and rescued a Yazidi woman who apparently was being held as a slave.

A U.S. defense official says an Army Delta commando team flew into eastern Syria from Iraq last night. The official says the commandos met stiff resistance and engaged in a firefight that included hand-to-hand combat before returning safely to their base.

The U.S. did not provide the full name of the militant commander, identified as Abu Sayyaf. A statement from the National Security Council said he had a senior role in overseeing the Islamic State group's illicit oil and gas operations and was also involved with military operations.

His wife was being debriefed to obtain intelligence about IS operations, according to a senior Obama administration official.
