Lawmakers set to deal with growing female prison population

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Legislature's finance committee is set to grapple this week with how to house the state's growing population of women prison inmates.

Department of Corrections data shows the female population has grown each year since 2012 after four years of decline. Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal calls for spending about $1 million over the next two years to re-open a 60-bed unit at the state women's prison in Taycheedah.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau, however, estimates the population will grow more than Walker anticipated over the biennium, to 1,442 prisoners in the 2016-17 fiscal year. The bureau suggests the committee could convert an annex at a Union Grove prison to house the additional prisoners at a cost of $2.6 million.

The committee is set to take up the issues on Tuesday.
