1st ever World Trade Center stair climb

(CNN) -- Hundreds gathered at the Freedom Tower in New York Sunday for a special tribute to victims of 9/11.

They participated in the first ever Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Stair Climb.

Siller was a firefighter who died in the attacks.

About 1,000 people turned out for the fundraiser, including military members, firefighters and loved ones of fallen first responders.

They climbed up 90 floors, about 2,000 steps, in honor of the people killed in the 9/11 terror attacks.

Sunday's climb raised money to build "smart homes" for the families of severely wounded veterans.

The tower climb also honored Billy Burke, a fire captain who died on the 27th floor of the World Trade Center after refusing to leave behind two people.
