Behind bars, on the ballot; ex-mayor wins Venezuela primary

Posted:

Daniel Ceballos may be in jail, but he's also on the ballot for Venezuela's legislative elections.

The former mayor of San Cristobal is among the winners of Sunday's opposition coalition primaries. They chose 42 of the 167 candidates who will compete against the governing socialist party.

Ceballos was arrested last year for refusing to help the government put down a wave of street protests that were fed in part by anger over crime, inflation and shortages.

The coalition is hoping that dissatisfaction will carry over into the ballot box when elections are held later this year. It sees the vote as its best chance in years to win a majority in the country's legislature.

Other candidates are being selected in negotiations among leaders of the 29-party coalition.
