Brewers send Gennett down; Gomez in lineup after beaning

DETROIT (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers have optioned second baseman Scooter Gennett to Triple-A Colorado Springs and recalled right-hander Corey Knebel.

Gennett hit .154 in 21 games for the Brewers this season, and he spent some time on the disabled list with a left hand injury. Gennett hit .289 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs last season, and Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell hopes the 25-year-old infielder can get back on track and return to the majors before too long.

Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez was penciled into the lineup against Detroit on Monday, a day after he was beaned by a 96 mph fastball from New York Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard. Gomez and Syndergaard exchanged gracious Twitter messages Monday.
