Why do we have a neon weather 9?

Posted:

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- If you've ever driven by our station on Grand Avenue, you may have noticed the colorful 9 on the side of the building.

Since Channel 9 first signed on in 1965, that 9 has undergone numerous facelifts, but it's always alerted people to changing conditions in the weather.

"It's a neat little thing its been around for many years," said WAOW Chief Meteorologist Justin Loew.

But did you know the weather 9 also let's you know what the forecast calls.

"People going by can tell what weather will be like in the next day 12-24 hours. Is is going to get warmer, colder, raining or snow on the way?" Justin said.

That's right -- those changing colors serve as a weather beacon and there's a poem to go along with it which our weather team knows by heart.

When the weather 9 is red; warmer weather is ahead.

When weather 9 is green; cooler weather is foreseen.

When the weather 9 is white; little change is in sight.

When the weather 9 is flashing by night or day; precipitation is on the way.

The neon 9 controls are in the weather center and keeping it up-to-date is part of basic training for new StormTrack 9 employees.

"How to change the colors and how to make it flash and they should probably learn the poem because they will probably get some questions about it because it's been around for decades," Justin said.

During that time -- the design of the 9 has undergone several makeovers. Its changing neon lights remain a constant in a broadcast world that is always changing.
