? MARSHALL (WKOW)-- An 8-year-old boy is accused of stabbing a dog on Sunday in the Village of Marshall.
“I couldn't even think of anyone that would have done this to her,” said Jacki Wilkerson, the owner of the dog. “She's not an aggressive dog.”
Sunday night, when Wilkerson and her family were out, a friend stopped by the house and discovered blood and a knife on the floor. Athena, the family dog, had been stabbed and her throat cut.
“The top of her head, here, two really deep cuts,” Wilkerson said. “And then on her neck, he cut her five times. The one was the hole of maybe a 50 cent piece.”
Wilkerson's neighbors suspected an 8-year-old friend of the family, who had previously played roughly with the dog. Police say the boy is the suspect in the case.
“It's scary,” Wilkerson said. “I mean, he's been over here, I've taken care of him as he was my own.”
Police say their investigation is nearly complete and they will refer charges in the case. Police say charges could include animal cruelty and trespassing. The case will go through juvenile court. Dane County Human Services is also involved. Wilkerson says she's glad the police are pursuing charges.
“I just want him to get the help that he needs,” Wilkerson said. “I mean this is serious.”
Meanwhile Athena needed surgery but is expected to make a full recovery.
“I'm just glad she's ok,” Wilkerson said. “She made it through. She's definitely part of the family.”
