Peninsula State Park observation tower closed to public
(WBAY) -- A popular spot for visitors in Door County is now closed, according to WBAY-TV in Green Bay.
The Department of Natural Resources says the observation tower at Peninsula State Park has been closed to visitors because of structural safety concerns.
The DNR says it received a report on Wednesday about an inspection done earlier this spring on the tower. The report revealed poor structural conditions in beams supporting the structure. The report recommended closing the tower to the public.
The 75-foot-tall tower provides sweeping views of the Bay of Green Bay and Door County.
The observation tower, known as Eagle Tower, was originally built in 1914 but was rebuilt in the 30s. The latest modifications to the tower were done in the 90s when refurbishments were made to the structure.
The DNR says more inspections will be needed to determine the future of the tower.
