Gov. Walker approves improvement project at Wausau Downtown Airport

The Wausau Downtown Airport will soon get some new additions. This after Governor Scott Walker approved the design for an improvement project. Governor Walker announced a nearly 170-thousand dollar project to design a new hangar area and taxiway to runway at the downtown airport.

The money for the design comes from the state, city, and federal aviation administration

Airport officials say the hangar area project will move in three phases. They say demand for pilots to park their planes has increased at the airport every year and the area is now almost full.

"This project is designed to do is create that design so that when we have demand for private hanger construction we can accommodate it right away," said airport manager, John Chmiel.

As far as the taxiway, he says it would provide pilots with a more direct route to one of the runways and save them time.

The initial design for the project is expected to be done by next month.Wausau airport officials say they hope that design will then be approved for funding for the first phase of the project next year.
