STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - The search is on in Portage County for two con artists who stole $20,000 in cash and other items from some homeowners who let them into their home.
It happened in the Township of Hull on May 16.
A couple reported two men showed up at their home and told them the roof on their house looked as if it needed repairs.
"It concerned the elderly residents because they just had it done a few years ago, but the con artists said it would be under warranty and they asked to come in and see if there was any water damage in regards to their roof," Portage County Mike Lukas said.
The sheriff says the unsuspecting couple allowed the so-called roof experts into their home to check for possible damage.
"One of the male subjects kept the elderly couple occupied while the other one went from room to room and ransacked things and was able to take $20,000 from cash and other items," the sheriff said.
The victims told investigators the thieves drove a tan or brown Chevrolet pickup truck and it was towing a trailer.
One of the men was described as being in his 40s; the other in his 20s. Both had darker skin and were missing teeth.
If you have any information you are asked to call the Crime Stoppers number at 1-888-346-6600. You can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
Lukas reminds homeowners never to let anyone in their home that they do not know.
Also, don't hesitate to ask contractors to show you a certified permit issued by the county.
"In Portage County, you have to have a solicitors permit to do any kind of door-to-door sales or paving. If they don't have it, they haven't registered," he said.
