Athlete of the Week: Jack Donahue, Marshfield

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -- Ask Jack Donahue about himself and he will likely defer.

“I'm not a big talker,” the Marshfield hurler said.

Luckily this week's Athlete of the Week has people around him that will speak for the pitcher.

“He has been pitching really well for us,” Marshfield Head Coach Mark Zee said. “He obviously had a 2-to-1 ball game against Wausau East.”

The senior standout went eight innings allowing just one run last Thursday. But he still chooses to deflect the credit.

“My dad is actually our pitching coach and he called a great game,” Donahue said. “I would say that my defense worked for me. But, my change-up was the key.”

The true change-up in his game came from summer workouts done at the Ron Wolforth Baseball Camp in Texas.

“I learned a ton of new stuff there to help me use my legs more,” Donahue said. “So I throw harder now and my stuff is better.”

In his final season for the Tigers, coaches say Donahue used those legs to step into a leadership role.

“He brought in some of the young pitchers this year and created a culture,” Zee said. “That was a positive throughout the season with all our pitchers.”

Zee is confident that his prolific pitcher will bring that positive energy back to the mound tomorrow night in the regional final against Chippewa Falls.

“He has pitched in some big games,” Zee said. “I know he has been amped up for this particular game.”

Donahue will once again lead a pitching staff that ranked second in the regular season in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
