PELICAN LAKE (WAOW) - A Pelican Lake man who is an emergency medical technician and does other things to help his community is the Jefferson Award winner for June.
Steven Sharon says he enjoys helping people.
"It means something. You see some of these people, they are in the worst possible day of their lives. That you can help them is the best thing in the world," he said.
Sharon deals with tragedy as an EMT with the Oneida County Ambulance Service, which operates out of the Pelican Lake Fire Department.
Tom Garrigan, a former physician's assistant, met Sharon in the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander and nominated him for the Jefferson Award.
"He is such a joy to have around, especially when things are stressful. I thought that Steve really exemplified what this award and what people like Steve are all about," Garrigan said.
Sharon also volunteers as a teacher for EMT classes and hunter safety courses.
