Bus crash closes NY tunnel, 18 injured

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (AP) -- Police say one bus has rear-ended another bus in the Lincoln Tunnel, injuring at least 18 people.

Joe Pentangelo with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police says the crash happened at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the center tube on the New York City side of the tunnel.

The tunnel links New Jersey with Manhattan. The Port Authority says 42 million vehicles a year travel through the tunnel.

Pentangelo says a New Jersey Transit bus hit the back of a bus operated by a private company.

The extent of the injuries is not known.

There are delays of up to one hour heading into New York because traffic is being diverted to the south tube.
