Appleton officials vote down land purchase for $37M library

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- Plans to build a $37 million public library in Appleton have hit a roadblock after city officials voted to oppose buying land for the project.

The city's Common Council voted 8-6 during a special meeting Wednesday night to oppose purchasing two properties at a cost of about $3.3 million. Negotiations and appraisal for the land had gone on for nearly a year. The library would have looked over the Fox River.

More than 40 people spoke before the council on the library project for roughly two hours, and alderman debated for less than 10 minutes before voting.

The project will go back to Appleton's Library Board for discussion on other possible sites and how to move forward with plans.
