French government survives no-confidence vote

Posted:

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has survived a no-confidence vote prompted by dissent within the governing Socialist party over pro-business reforms.

On Tuesday, Valls invoked special powers to force passage of a pro-business bill making modest reforms including allowing more Sunday openings and making it easier to lay off employees. The bill passed over the objections of about 40 rebels in Valls' party who consider the balance has tilted too far toward free market policies.

Valls easily won the vote as the Socialist mavericks were not willing to help bringing the government down.

The premier vowed that the government "will continue to reform for the French and for France."
