Milwaukee area police officer wounded by burglary suspect

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A suburban Milwaukee police detective has been shot and wounded by a burglary suspect.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn says three Wauwatosa police officers were investigating a local burglary when they confronted a suspect in a car in a Milwaukee apartment parking lot Friday morning.

The suspect opened fire on the officers and the officers fired back but a 52-year-old plain-clothed detective, who has 25 years of service, was hit once. The suspect ran away.

Flynn says his wounds are not thought to be life threatening.

Flynn says several law enforcement agencies are actively searching for the suspect with dogs and by helicopter and he is thought to be armed and dangerous.

Lt. Mark Stanmeyer said it is unknown if the suspect was wounded.
