Manhunt for escaped killers shifts after possible sighting

FRIENDSHIP, N.Y. (AP) -- Investigators tracking two murder convicts who escaped from a northern New York prison are scouring a rural area near the Pennsylvania border after possible sightings shifted the search across the state.

Officers are searching an area in Allegany County, in New York's southern tier, a day after someone reported spotting two men near a railroad line in the town of Friendship on Saturday.

State police say the search is focused on an area along Route 20 and Interstate 86. That's some 350 miles from the prison near the Canadian border that David Sweat and Richard Matt fled on June 6.

State police have moved the search command post from the prison to Cadyville, on the other side of the state. They're advising the public to report any suspicious activity and asked residents who live in the Friendship area along the New York-Pennsylvania border to be on alert.
