GOP senator says goal remains to finish budget by July

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Sen. Luther Olsen says lawmakers are "moving closer" toward a deal to end a nearly monthlong budget stalemate, and the goal remains to have a new two-year spending plan passed by July 1.

Olsen commented Tuesday after leaving a meeting with other Republican leaders who have been talking for weeks to break an impasse that's held up voting on the budget in the Joint Finance Committee. Olsen is a member of that committee.

Olsen says the budget committee could meet late this week to pass out the plan, and both the Senate and Assembly could vote on it the same day next week.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says "we're making progress."

Republicans have been arguing over roads funding, changes to the prevailing wage law and other issues.
