Athlete of the Week: Stephanie Meuret, D.C. Everest

D.C. Everest goalkeeper Stephanie Meuret employed an interesting strategy to keep balls out of the net during the Division 1 soccer championship game.

“I was like, 'I hope they don't go in',” Meuret said.

Now, it did take more than hope for the goaltender to make her four official saves in the Evergreens' victory against Kettle Moraine.

“I just had to put all of my effort into it,” Meuret said. “And make that save so we can still have a 0-0 game.”

It remained tied at zero through regulation, and the first overtime, heightening Meuret's emotions.

“Nerve-wracking,” Meuret said. “Because you don't want to go into penalty kicks. Well my team has a lot of confidence in me in penalty kicks but I knew that we were going to get a goal sometime soon in the second.”

Her confidence was warranted. Jordyn Ostrowski scored the game winning goal in the 104th minute leaving just six minutes for the keeper to do what she had already done for more than one hundred.

“I just felt so relaxed then because I was looking at the clock,” Meuret said. “Ok it was one hundred and four minutes, we finally scored so we get a break, just to relax our nerves going into double overtime.”

While Meuret was very grateful that Newsline 9 awarded her the Athlete of the Week, a different piece of hardware holds the top spot in her senior year of memories.

“Going down last year, we got the silver ball,” Meuret said. “And my senior year we got the gold ball. Sharing it with my teammates, we have nine seniors and it felt amazing to us because we ended our senior year on a good note. Our coach was very happy about it.”

The Evergreen's title came just one year removed from losing in the championship game.
