1997: Woman cooks at church for 40 years

(WAOW) – A Marathon County woman spent more than 40 years cooking at an area church.

During this week in 1997, WAOW introduced you to her.

Helen Wilkowski has baked thousands of pies. She's been cooking for the St. Ladislaus Church in Bevent for about 40 years.

Helen cooks for weddings, church events and funerals. Every week, she feeds up to 1,000 people.

"She makes good homemade noodles, chicken soup, stuffing, a whole lot of homemade noodles made."

A little family inspiration caused Helen to step into the kitchen.

"My one daughter got married and I took over. Just for the wedding day, I cooked. That's how I got started,” Wilkowski said.

For Helen, the pace is manageable, but at 83, she says she hopes to work for about one more year and then hang up her apron. But others say she won't quit.

"I think she's going to hang on until she can't no more I think."

If Helen does retire, she won't be forgotten.

"Oh, we will miss her greatly. And I know she's passed on a lot of her skills and a lot of her expertise to a lot of people here."

And she has an unforgettable effect on others.

"A very calming influence. I think that's probably one of the greatest gifts that she brings to the perish."

And she shares her gifts, touching the lives of many people through her cooking.

Helen passed away in 2009.
