Former Polish senator charged in 1992 death of journalist

Prosecutors in Poland say they have charged a businessman and former senator from the city of Poznan with instigating the presumed murder of an investigative journalist in 1992.

Prosecutor Piotr Kosmaty said Monday the indictment has been sent to court. He identified the suspect only as Aleksander G., in line with Poland's privacy laws.

Broadcaster TVN24 showed footage of Poznan businessman Aleksander Gawronik, who was a senator from 1993-97, in handcuffs.

The journalist, Jaroslaw Zietara, went missing Sept. 1, 1992. He had been threatened in connection with articles he wrote about shady business, which mentioned Gawronik. His body has never been found.

Kosmaty said witnesses have testified they heard the suspect ordering Zietara "liquidated once and for all." He could face up to a life in prison if convicted.
