Several eagles hurt in Central Wisconsin during holiday weekend

The Raptor Education Group out of Anitgo was part of several attempts to rescue eagles over the holiday weekend.

According to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, one eagle was found in a ditch in the Township of Marathon on Friday. An expert with the education group came to help but officials say the bird died while being transported, according to Raptor Education Group leaders. They said it looked like the animal was hit by a car and had a severe spinal injury and internal bleeding.

The Raptor Education Group executive director, Marge Gibson, said they are also treating an eagle that was hurt Sunday. She said the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department rescued an eagle that appears to have been poisoned.

Gibson said they are treating a third eagle that was hurt this weekend. She says an eagle's wing was severely broken when it was hit by fireworks. The director said they are planning a surgery to repair the wing on Monday.

Raptor Education Group leaders said an increase in traffic and visitors to the area during the holiday weekend might have contributed to the spike in eagle injuries.
