UN chief says questions unanswered about Hammarskjold crash

Posted:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says an independent review of new information about the mysterious 1961 plane crash that killed U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold puts to rest claims that he was assassinated after surviving the crash but leaves many questions unanswered about a possible aerial attack or other interference.

Ban says in a letter to the U.N. General Assembly circulated Monday that some countries believed to have information about the crash that occurred while Hammarskjold was on a peace mission to newly independent Congo didn't provide "a substantive response," didn't respond or maintained that documents were classified.

Ban says a further investigation is necessary to finally establish the facts, and he urges all countries to disclose relevant information.

Hammarskjold's plane crashed in the African bush in Northern Rhodesia, today's Zambia.
