WOODRUFF, Wis. (AP) -- A consultant to technology companies plans to run against Republican U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy in northern and central Wisconsin's 7th District next year. Stevens Point native Kirk Bangstad launched his campaign Tuesday. It's the Democrat's first run at political office. In his announcement, Bangstad says "Washington is broken," and that his background in helping companies "is a perspective that Washington needs now more than ever." The 38-year-old and his wife, Elizabeth, own a fitness studio in Minocqua. Bangstad also is an opera singer. In a statement, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Zach Hunter says if an opera singer is the best Democrats can do, "the fat lady has begun singing." Duffy was first elected to Congress in 2010. He appeared on MTV's "The Real World" in the 1990s.
