Highway worker struck and killed in Lincoln County crash

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department says Marcus Wydeven, 50, of Tomahawk was killed in a crash near Merrill Tuesday.

They say Wydeven, a highway worker, was a flagging traffic at the site, and was holding a stop sign at the time of the incident. He had been with the Lincoln County Highway Department for 20 years.

Officials say an 84-year-old Antigo woman hit the worker before her car left the road, flipped over and spun several times. The woman had to be cut from her car and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with unknown injuries.

Crews performed CPR on the worker at the scene.  He was also transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The crash happened on Highway 17 near Smith Road northeast of Merrill at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway were closed for about 5 hours.

Police officials said this was a reminder to always be alert while driving in construction zones.

"Just be aware," Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Lt. Tim Fischer said. "When you get to a construction zone, people's family members are working those sites, and they want to go home just as much as you want to get to where you're heading to."
